Dear Friends,
Welcome back to our study in John. I trust that you’ve had a wonderful Christmas and that the joy of Christ fills your life daily. Today, we’re continuing in John 1. We’ve seen that the Word was preexistent, that is Jesus pre-dates time itself. In the beginning He was. Today we’ll continue by seeing that the Word (Jesus) is coexistent.
II. The Word Coexistent (vs. 1b-c, vs. 2)
Verse 1 continues with the idea of logos. As we saw in the first part of this message, logos is part practical, part philosophical term. The very word itself conveys all that is needed to understand the phrase. By looking at verse 1 in parts, we see that an order that can only be of God. Jesus posesses coexistence with God the Father. This is the only logical conclusion that can be drawn from the text.
a. Distinct Persons – The Greek structure here indicates a coexistence by the phrase pros theos or “with God.” This distinction indicates John’s intent to ascribe different personalities within the Godhead, i.e. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. An examination of John 5:22-24 shows that distinction in terms of function.
b. Different Functions — As we see in John 5:22-24, each distinct person has a different function. The Father spoke creation into existence, sent His Son to the world, the Son came as suffering servant to be the propitiation for our sins. The Son will come again as Judge and Magistrate. He IS King of Kings, and LORD of Lords.
c. Divine Intentions – If we look further into the first chapter of John, we see the divine intentions of this coexistence, see John 1:12-13
I pray that the Lord has given you new insight into His Word through this session. It is my prayer that we all grow in knowledge of His Word.

Welcome to the initial post of our new series on the Gospel of John. We will be looking at the first two verses of Chapter 1. This passage is perhaps the most beloved and most quoted by inerrancy scholars who point to the vivid language used by the Beloved Apostle. In this passage we see the Word Preexistent, we see the Word Coexistent, and finally we see the Word Divine. Most reputable scholars agree that John the Apostle authored this Gospel. There is little to no evidence to support authorship by John the Elder.
The Eternal Word
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
I. The Word Preexistent (vs. 1) The verse in the Greek begins, En arche‘ en ho logos i.e. In the beginning (a fixed position) was the Word. The word logos here means that the entire idea is embodied by this one word. In other words, the fact that Jesus is the Word, that entire concept is expressed in this word. The fixed position of arche’ means that Jesus was in fact preexistent before the world as stated in Genesis 1:1-5.
a. Eternal — Looking at Micah 5:2, we see that the One to be Ruler of Israel was to come out of Bethlehem and that he was from everlasting. The existent Jesus was from the beginning.
b. Enormous — Colossians 1:17 shows us that Jesus immense nature. In and through Him all things exist.
Jesus Deity is placed at a high premium in John’s Gospel. We see constant reference to the “I AM” statements… we see John the Baptist’s response upon seeing Jesus:
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
John recognized that the object of his preaching was now walking the earth. Theologically, this emphasis on Jesus as Christ is called high Christology.
It is my desire that those who read this blog will come to a greater understanding of God’s Word. It is my desire that those who don’t know Him will come to place their trust in Him.

Welcome to The King Is Coming. This blog will be seperate from my other blog project, Good Sense. The purpose of this blog is to conduct expository bible study through a selected book of the Bible. We will be beginning with the Gospel of John. This happens to be my favorite Gospel and it is with high anticipation that I look to this study. I will set forth a few ground rules and handy things to know.
1.) I will be using two primary translations of the Bible on this blog. I will use the New King James Version in quoting verses and textual passages. I will use the New American Standard Bible in undertaking exegesis of the selected passage. Unless otherwise noted, these will be the primary translations used here. The reasons are simple, the manuscripts used by the New King James are the same as the those used by the KJV .The NASB is simply the most literal, word-for-word translation available in modern translations.
2.) We will undertake a verse-by-verse exposition of the Scriptures. We will see applications to modern life in these verses. We will occasionally use an illustration, but it is my firm belief that the text is its own best illuminator.
3.) As this blog is about Christian life and Bible study (and NOT apologetics) comments will be moderated. This is to avoid spam, profane comments and rude, blasphemous comments.
